What does this have to do with anything? Plenty.
I asked Rip if I could start writing for ProRec and after a long phone conversation about what I should write about, we came up with the idea of doing an advice column. The main difference between this column and the ones in other magazines is that I'm going to write about whatever you want me to. Yup, that's right. Whatever you, the reader want to know about just tell me and I'll fill your brains with my knowledge.
My name is Jay Kahrs. I've been involved in music for about 10 years. I play guitar, bass, some drums and I also sing when I'm forced to. My main thing is engineering. I attended Five Towns College in L.I. NY for a year, then jumped head first into an internship, then freelance engineering. Now I have my own studio in the basement (like everyone else) that I run commercially. I've worked on projects for major labels, indie labels, demos, etc.
I'm not all that well versed when it comes to midi and computers, but I know how to mic a drum set and play peacekeeper when the bass player pisses off the guitarist again. I'm not a huge fan of digital but I like it for what it does. I'm an analog fan and I'm proud to say it. Sure, I've used ADAT's and DA-88's but I'd much rather track and mix off of my modified Fostex E-16 (analog 16 track).
I like hockey (Devils fan, I do live in NJ after all), football (Giants), and live off fast food like everyone else in the music business. I also work as a salesman at a music store selling everything from guitars to 20,000 watt tri-amped PA rigs.
Oh yeah, Rip asked me for a picture but I didn't have time to scan one, so you'll have to wait till next month to see what I look like.
I figured that I would try to write about things that everyone can use rather then being gear-specific (like, use a Neve EQ) or just computer tricks. Whether it's micing a drum set, picking a new mic, re-designing your control room (or bedroom) for better acoustics I can tackle it.
I realize that everybody is at different places in the learning process so I want to make sure I'm complete. However, if I'm going too slow just let me know. I won't bore you (at least I'll try not to) with useless techno-babble unless it's revelent to what I'm writing about.
In short, if you want to know what power amp specs really mean, then let me know. If you want to know how to mic a piano then I'll write about that. How does a patchbay work? Just write to me. If I don't tackle it immediately then I'll do it soon. If you need the answer to a quick question let me know and I'll e-mail you back ASAP. It'll be interesting if nothing else…
Happy tracking,
Jay
