How is the best way to substitute a laptop for guitar effects

Hey guys, I am currently trying to figure out a way to use a laptop for guitar effects for live playing.  I am more concererned with hardware aspects rather than software but any advice you may have is welcomed and appreciated.  Basically right now all I have is the start of a hopefully good idea.  What I want to do is run the computer through the effects loop of my amp and still use my amps natural overdrive and a normal wah pedal.  What would be the best way to plug the two quarter inch jacks into my laptop?  Would I have latency problems or any other problems that should be mentioned?  Also would I lose tone from my guitar like what happens when you plug into a wah pedal that is not true bypassed?

The main reason I want to do this is because of the complexity of the effect plug-in and unlimited flexibily. Thanks ahead of time for all advice.

Re: How is the best way to substitute a laptop for guitar effects

Can I be frank?  This sounds like a really bad idea .

However, if you must, here's the issues you should consider:

  1. Laptop sound I/O is usually poor.  Expect noise.  Don't get your hopes up.  If your laptop sounds OK, then OK, otherwise, you'd need a higher quality I/O device.
  2. Laptops are fragile.  Be careful!
  3. Murphy's Law works double for live computer rigs.  Any problem that can happen will happen.
  4. Latency could be an issue depending on the plugs, the host, and the power of your laptop.

Having said all that... do whatcha gonna do, and let us know how it turns out.
