Two Mics?

I was watching the voices being recorded for a cartoon.  Each actor had two mics, one about 18" away and another about 12" behind that.  Why two?

Re: Two Mics?

I don't know the answer, but 2 thoughts come to mind:

1: I'm assuming in this kind of acting, the volume of the actor's voice is all over the map, from a whisper to a shreiking scream. So the close mike might be for normal volume dialogue and the farther mic for the moments when spongebob is screaming.

2: Perhaps the distance mic is for moments when the character is off screen or supposed to appear in the background.

I'm leaning towards #1.

Re: Two Mics?

To better catch the double entendres.
