Removable Hard disks; external or bay

Time for a DAW upgrade.

Since I track on one location and (often) mix on another I need a portable harddisk. My current daw has a removable bay, but that gives me some problems. One is heat; the little fan included in the bay can't cope, and another problem is the shaky connection. More than a few times dropouts occurred. But then again, maybe that was due to heat also. I record up to 16 tracks at once. Mixing may be around 24 tracks.

Noise level is also an issue.

So, external drive with firewire or removable bay? Any recommendations? Brands?

Thanks.

Re: Removable Hard disks; external or bay

I prefer a removable SATA bay.  Not sure what brand I've currently got, but most any will work well.  The drive case is aluminum and there is no loud fan.  They are inexpensive and work great.

Firewire, USB, and eSATA will not give you the same results.  I've tried them all.

Thanks.

What was wrong with eSATA? I would expect it to be as good as SATA. (I was just looking at the Western My Book external disk with eSATA)

Re: Removable Hard disks; external or bay

The performance wasn't as good.  Benchmarking showed it to be about 50% that of regular SATA.  Could have been the drive model, or the controller, or maybe eSATA just is slower.  I didn't have the time to resolve the problem, and went with what worked for me.  I don't remove the drive from the computer frequently, or use the drive on more than two computers, so the internal drive works for me.  If I needed to use the drive on several computers (such that it became impractical to purchase the needed number of bays) then this wouldn't work.

Re: Removable Hard disks; external or bay

I would suggest recording to a standard internal drive, then copying to an external firewire or eSATA drive.
