overclocking

Okay, I'll admit it... I'm pretty much an overclocking virgin.  Haven't done any pushing since the old 400 mHz days.

So I recently aquired an Asus P5W DH Deluxe, e6700 processor, Corsair 1066 RAM, some 400 gig Samsung Spinpoint SATA drives, Ninja peocessor, cooler, and a few other goodies, and stuffed them all into an Antec P-182 case with a Zen fanless powersupply.  I hear that I can push this rig to 3.45, 3.5, 3.65, or even to 4.... but I ust don't know how.

Where can I find simple instructions that would allow me to input the correct settings for a given boost and get back to work?  I'm not really interested in squeezing every possible % out of the machine, I just want to take it up to a good, stable, and safe  place and get back to work.

Re: overclocking

You should have a program called AiBoost on your Asus CD. This allows you to set overclocking variables from Windows without mucking about in the bios.

Re: overclocking

I understand this, but I am of the belief that doing it ahead of the OS is going to save me some CPU cycles.  Is this not true?  I fe;t that this app was a lot like a Windows basedRAID solution... great for the needs of the masses but not quite so valuable to us audio guys.

Re: overclocking

True, but you could use this to find the changes that make the most difference with the least risk before committing them to bios. It's a PITA to reboot each time you want to make a change.

In my own instance, I've found that adjusting the FSB is really my only effective tool, almost any memory timing changes seemed to make things less stable or reduce speed.

Re: overclocking

I was thinking of doing pretty much the same system.... only with a oc'd Q6600 can anyone point me in the direction of which would be better for softsynths and such? (BFD, and Gigasampler come to mind)

Thanks in advance for any input.
