Multitrack software - adat sync

I have a Hammerfall digi9652 card, and I want to find some multitrack editing software that will enable me to import / export  tracks to and from ADAT XT's in sync via the adat 9 pin sync protocol. After much searching on the net I have discovered I must be the only one in the world wanting to do this, because information is not to be had. I am very familiar with Sound Forge 6, but I have been unable to determine if Sony products will sync up via asio / adat machine control. Anyone have experience with this?  I am presently running win XP.

From the RME forum:

What multitrack software will timecode sync in slave mode to adat timecode on the digi9652 adat 9 pin input?

Windows only: Cubase/Nuendo and Samplitude/Sequoia. Or in other words: the software that supports ASIO Positioning Protocol.

Re: Multitrack software - adat syncIf

oops, that was your question, huh? Did those not work out for you?

The JL Cooper datasync box should be able to convert MMC to ADAT sync for you, and MMC should be easier to use with a variety of appilcations.

Re: Multitrack software - adat syncIf

I'm hesitant about spending $2000 for software until I know more about it and find what is best suited for my needs. All I really want to do is simple editing and Samplitude and Cubase look like  alot more frills than what I require. In fact if Sound Forge had positioning protocol, this is really all I would need. If the Cubase SX3 will do the job , I would probably buy it right away as it looks to be reasonably priced, but  I would still like to see what the software is like. After using Forge I would like to use something similar so I don't have to re-learn the software.

The other problem I have run into is finding current demo software. It's been alluded to that Adobe Audition 3.0  has this positioning feature now, but I haven't been able to find a demo for it, and again I'm reluctant to rush out and buy something until I know it'll do the job for me. Apparently Wavelab 6 possibly has this as well.

The Samplitude 9 demo I downloaded keeps crashing everytime I try to record a 30 second segment.  I haven't been able to do much of an evaluation other than  if the full working version is as unstable as the demo, I don't want any part of it. This has become something of a frustration. How do the software developers expect to sell product unless a potential buyer can see what it does? It's like buying a car sight unseen.

Re: Multitrack software - adat syncIf

I think hardware is the way to go for this. In fact, you don't really need them to sync to your computer, just to each other, correct? You can import up to 24 tracks at once using the RME card's 3 ADAT inputs. A BRC will sync the ADATs to each other, and only run you $100-$150. Once they're transfered, you don't need to worry about syncing it to your daw.

At that point any multitrack program will do. I was a Samplitude user (I skipped V9, not surprised it gave you problems, I may upgrade to V10 which has gotten better initial reports), but I've been using Reaper for a while now, and it makes me happy. It's trial is unrestricted for an unlimited amount of time, so it's hard to go wrong.

Re: Multitrack software - adat sync

Bill - the truth is, you are (practically speaking) the only person who wants to do this.   DAW recording is so advanced that pretty much everyone who even bothers with digital audio editing at all will just use the DAW as the recorder, instead of keeping the audio on the ADATs.  I don't know your application, so I may be off-base, but I tend to agree with darjarma.  Why not just fly the audio onto the computer and leave it there?

I have not performed this task using a digi9652, but I do know that if Matthias says it will work with a particular application, then it will work, or by God he'll make it work.  RMEs customer support is legendary.

I ended up buying Cubase 4. It syncs well although it looks like there is a bit of a learning curve here for the software. The reason I wanted to be able to do this is I have a number of projects on adat tape that I want to be able to edit and save back to tape for archival purposes. The other concern is I still am hesitant to "put all the eggs in one basket" as is with hard drive storage. I have CDr's from 8 years ago that will no longer play even though at the time the projected archival life was decades at least. This was pure speculation on the part of the manufacturer. I do have VHS video tapes from 1982 that still play fine; the VHS tape seems to be a reasonably stable medium.  I can use the A/D and D/A converters in the adats and do direct  DAW recording now as well, while still having the sync capabilities. Thanks to all for the replies and advice.

VHS is analog video, which is quite forgiving of loss.  Had those been digital tapes recorded in 1982, I seriously doubt they would still play.
