Time for New Monitors

It is great that you guys are back online, I was freaking out when I couldn't get here. Rip and everyone else was major part of getting me interested in recording.

As  you might guess, I'm a young guy and am in the process of building my studio. The contruction phase is mostly done and I have my first serious clients in the studio right now. We have been tracking for several months and are nearing the mixing stage and it's time I get some monitors in the studio that I can trust. I'm working with a set of Samson 65a's right now and I'd like to pickup something more accurate. I've been zeroing in on either the DynAudio BM5a's or the ADAM A7's. I know that my next step is to go and listen to them but, in a retail setting.. what am I listening for? I'll be trying to evaluate the monitors in an unfamiliar place, how does that work?

Is my best option to just buy both and take them back to the studio to see how they sound? Even then.. what am I listening for? I don't want them to sound 'good' I want them to sound 'right'. How do I know what is right? My control room is treated and setup as best it can be but even if I put the two sets side by side how will I know which set is the better fit? Do I need to pickup an RTA and sort out which is most accurate in my space?

I hear people say all the time that you need to listen to them to decide.. what am I listening for?

Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer...

Robert

Re: Time for New Monitors

I really love the Dynaudio stuff.  Bruce Richardson has a pair of BM5as combined with a pair of Bag End subs that is one of the most brutally honest playback systems I've ever heard.

As for evaluating the speakers, I'd suggest you get a bunch of listening material together, including some mixes you've done, and check them on the speakers in your room, listening for known problems.  For example, if you did a mix that was a little bright or muddy, or had too much guitar or toms, then check that mix in your room and see if the speakers are truly pointing out the problem.  Also listen to known "perfect" professional mixes of music you know really well, and make sure the speakers aren't hiding anything.

Mostly, try to listen for what's "exaggerated" and for what's "missing",  this will require you to use material you are intimately familiar with.

Re: Time for New Monitors

Thanks for the response. It sounds like you recommend I get both speakers into my mix room and try them out on music I know well. Sounds like a plan. I'm really looking forward to it. Do have any idea why Bruce didn't get the sub from Dynaudio? He, no doubt, has more experience in this then I do and I'd be interested to find out the logic behind that. The Dynaudio sub that is recommend for the BM-5as isn't terribly impressive on paper and seems pricey. I'm not going to be able to add a sub immediately to my setup but it's encouraging to know I'm not locked into Dynaudio for it.

Re: Time for New Monitors

I have a pair of Dynaudio BM5a's and I love them! I was originally going to go with the Mackie's but these beauties beat them, to my ears anyway.
